What to do, where to stay, and where to eat in Montreal

Although on the other side of the Atlantic from Europe, Montreal’s longstanding reputation as an old-world city is well-deserved, with centuries-old stone buildings and traditional French restaurants. But it’s far from being a fossilized relic, stuck in the year of Montreal’s founding (1642). Step outside the cobblestoned streets of Vieux-Montréal, and you’re surrounded by cutting-edge buildings from the likes of I. M. Pei, innovative cuisine served in high-design dining rooms, breakthrough music from bands such as Arcade Fire and The Dears, and a melting pot of cultures that includes Italian, Chinese, and Caribbean. What binds it all together are the Montrealers themselves, who embrace their dualisms with relish.
