Bloomfield Great House
Not many tourists pass through the old bauxite-mining town of Mandeville in the central highlands; those who do usually come for the food at Bloomfield Great House. Originally a coffee estate, this meticulously renovated Georgian architectural gem from the early 1800’s is now a bastion of good, old-fashioned Jamaican dishes like saltfish and ackee (a nutty tropical fruit), jerk pork, pepper shrimp, and a wonderful shrimp, calamari, and whitefish stew in a spicy tomato sauce. The mahogany-lined bar upstairs is a casual weekend and after-work gathering place for well-heeled locals and expats hailing from Australia, the U.S., and the U.K.
Tip: This makes an ideal stop for lunch on the long drive between Negril and Kingston.
