Harry's Roadhouse

96 Old Las Vegas Highway (about a mile south of junction with Old Pecos Trail)
5 miles south of Downtown
Santa Fe, New Mexico
505/983-7712 or 505/989-4629

Get away from the tourist crowd at this convivial roadhouse, where locals meet to tuck into creative, reasonably priced comfort chow. The multi-roomed space includes a retro-hip diner with mauve chairs and Formica tables, a warmly lit lounge with a fireplace and tall bar chairs, and a sunroom with tall windows overlooking the piñon-shrouded back patio. Owner Harry Shapiro's hearty dishes include fabulous green-chile cheeseburgers (a local specialty), thin-crust pizzas, and Moroccan vegetable stew; and every day there’s a new lineup of tantalizing dessert specials, from cream pies to fresh-fruit cobblers. It’s hard to beat Shapiro’s blue-cornmeal waffles with honey butter and bananas, which are served every day of the week.

Tip: In a city with far too many overhyped, watered-down margaritas, Harry's serves arguably the finest for miles.
